Case Study - Organisational Human Factors Support to a Major Refinery on the American Gulf Coast
The purpose of this project was to support and enable the workforce at the refinery to make the necessary transformation to a high safety and performance culture.
Human Engineering Limited provided human factors (HF) services to a major refinery on the American Gulf Coast in support of two work streams within their improvement programme. The programme was developed to enhance the company’s organizational performance to ensure that the refinery complies with industry standards and best practice. The support enabled the refinery to meet a number of key milestones of their Strategic Implementation Plan set for 2009.
The main focus of the work was to provide support to the Front Line Leaders (FLL) in the development of their leadership skills in the field. A team of 6 consultants from Human Engineering was seconded to the refinery for a period of 4 months to provide in-the-field support. The work was conducted in two phases: Phase 1 – In-field support to the Front Line Leaders (FLL) in the dissemination of a new Maintenance Procedure Process to their teams in the form of a Toolbox Talk, and Phase 2 – Leadership skills coaching for FLLs.
